Own Your Choices

Making excuses – we are all guilty of it at one time or another.

“I’ve been too busy to cook fresh food”

“I don’t have time to exercise”

“It would have been rude to say no”

I know that I have used all the above and many more in my time. We all live busy lives and have a lot of pressures on our time. Between work, hubby, family, friends, looking after the house and blogging its hard to strike a balance. But that doesn’t mean its not possible.

OWN YOUR CHOICES

Every day we are presented with hundreds of choices. Shall I walk or take the bus? Exercise or an extra 30 minutes in bed? An apple or a chocolate muffin?

Every one of your decisions gets you closer or further away from your goals. My new mantra is Own Your Choices. If I chose the muffin over the apple then I own the consequences. It’s not the wrong decision – there’s nothing wrong with a treat every now and then but you can’t use excuses. It’s your decision to eat it.

I keep repeating this phrase to myself. I want my choices to lead to healthy weight loss – so I need to make every one count.

P.S. I’m thinking about getting a bracelet or a charm or something made with this phrase on – as a daily reminder to own my choices. Any ideas where I can get something?

Day 2:

Food Diary

  • Breakfast: Greek yogurt and granola. Cup of tea
  • Snack: Apple
  • Lunch: Turkey, lettuce & sweet chilli sauce roll, crisps
  • Snack: Grapes
  • Dinner: Chicken, baked chips and peas

Christmas Countdown

46 days until Christmas!

Yesterday I stepped on the scales for the first time since my wedding in September – I got a bit of a shock. I currently weigh 9lbs more than I did on my wedding day. I shouldn’t be surprised – there have been far too many treats and meals out, cosy bottles of wine in front of a DVD and creeping portion sizes.

I’ll fill you in on a little background. 2 1/2 years ago, at my heaviest I weighed 16 stone. Over the following 18 months I lost 4 stone to get down to just over 12 stone. At this point I went Wedding Dress shopping and found the perfect dress. The size I tried on in the store (UK 12) was a perfect fit and the cut meant that it emphasised my slimmer top half and hit the problem areas of my bum and legs. I was in love with the dress and happy with how it looked at that size so I made a decision to stop and maintain until after the wedding. Instead I focused on toning my arms and developing a healthier diet to improve my skin and hair.

It worked. When I went for my first fitting some 7 months later the dress was still a perfect fit and I maintained that weight until my wedding day.

So back to today. 9 weeks since the wedding and 9 lbs heavier (eek!). The plan was always to crack on and lose the remaining weight after the wedding so I would like to lose around 2 stone to get me into my healthy weight range.

How shall I do this?

Well I have been thinking this over all weekend. I hope that I have learned enough about eating healthily to do this without resorting to counting every morsel that I eat by calories or points. I will focus on healthy foods, minimal snacking and increased exercise to get rid of the last of my excess weight.

I plan to weigh in weekly and will post my progress here. Christmas is a great incentive for me so I’m starting my Christmas Countdown today.

Day 1:

Weigh in 1 – 181lbs

Food Diary

  • Breakfast: Greek yogurt and cereal. Tea with milk
  • Snack: Handful of crisps
  • Lunch: Roll with roast chicken, lettuce, tomato & cucumber, grapes
  • Snack: Apple, tea with milk. Baby Bel Light
  • Dinner: Chicken Casserole, small wholemeal bread roll
  • Snack: 2 snack size Milky Ways (damn Halloween!)

Back to business…

Last night I made this fab recipe idea from Fitness and Spice.

DSC02196 DSC02197

I have made similar quiches before but never with yogurt as the dairy ingredient. I broke from the recipe a little based on what veg I had in and only used 6 eggs as that’s all I had. The result was really good. I think next time I would like to try it with some spinach in (I used red pepper and sweetcorn which is what I had in and it needed a stronger flavour). I would also use a lot more pepper next time but the texture was great. I’m enjoyed a cold slice of this with my lunch.

Bonfire Night

Tonight is Guy Fawkes Night – also known as Bonfire Night or Firework Night – in the UK. The 5th November marks the anniversary of the Gunpowder Plot in 1605 when Catholic conspirators (including Guy Fawkes) attempted to blow up the Houses of Parliament in London during the State Opening of Parliament. The plot was intended to kill King James and many of the Protestant aristocracy but failed when Guy Fawkes was caught.

The customs in the UK centre on firework displays and bonfires. In the past most families would set off their own fireworks in their gardens but due to safety concerns this is less common and many people (us included) prefer to attend a professionally organised event.

The two best things about Guy Fawkes Night are Toffee Apples and Sparklers!

We headed to a big local display with friends

DSC02210 DSC02215

Sorry for the terrible photos! We had a great time even though the weather was a bit iffy! It kept spitting with rain and it was really muddy on the field.

We ended the evening with sparklers in the garden!!

Recipe – Chilli Con Carne

For more recipes check out my Recipe page

This is a real favourite and a great winter warmer. I love this served with anything from rice to baked sweet potato or for a less healthy treat – tortilla chips.

This recipe makes about 8 servings – I always make a large batch as it freezes really well.

Ingredients:

  • 800g lean beef mince
  • 2 cans of chopped tomatoes
  • 1 can red kidney beans
  • 1 Onion
  • 1 can Sweetcorn
  • 1 Red and 1 green pepper
  • Chilli spice mix
  • 1tbsp olive oil
  • Crème fraiche (to serve – optional)

Method:

  • Saute the chopped onion in the olive oil for 5 minutes until soft

DSC02185

  • Break up the mince and add to the pan. Stir until all the mince has coloured

DSC02186

  • Stir in the diced peppers and mix

DSC02187

  • Add the tinned tomatoes, kidney beans and chilli spice mix and stir

DSC02188

  • Simmer for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally
  • Add the drained sweetcorn and simmer for another 10 minutes

DSC02190I love this served with a spoon of  creme fraiche or sour cream to cool the heat!

Enjoy! :)

I’ve got a new toy

I had a much better start to today as I remembered to set my alarm last night! Again I had part prepared my work food last night (I’m loving being so organised!) so it didn’t take long to get ready.

I used up the last of the box of Special K this morning with skimmed milk and 1 slice of granary toast picked up at the canteen. This is a bit of a compromise between preparing my whole breakfast at home and buying at work. I don’t find the cereal on its own keeps me full so the addition of the toast tides me over nicely!

I had quite a quiet day at work today but from the sounds of things my week is going to get very hectic very quickly! I have heard a whisper that a paper I was due to write for the end of November is now going to be needed by senior management for a meeting on the 23rd. That means it will need to have gone through a couple of reviews and revisions by this date so I need to crack on with it ASAP. Unfortunately the figures I need to write it aren’t available today so I can’t make a start. I have requested them and they should be ready for tomorrow morning so that’s when the hard work will begin.

I realised today that I haven’t introduced you yet to my newest piece of tech!

Meet my new Netbook.

DSC02191 DSC02194

I love this thing! Now I can use Live Writer to blog anywhere! It’s lightweight enough to be portable (look out for blogging on the go) and can travel with us too. Its also great for using around the house (I don’t always want to sit in the study to blog or surf the internet). As you can see in this pic I am blogging in the bedroom as the lounge is too cold!

I’m running Windows 7 on the Netbook and I really like it. Is anyone else using it?

Blogger Question Time

I’m starting an occasional series of posts where my favourite bloggers will be subjected to my 10 killer questions on their food, exercise and blogging habits. Any volunteers to be my first subject?

If you’re interested drop me an email or leave a comment and I’ll send you details.

Who didn’t set the alarm??

Happy Monday!

Unfortunately when I went to bed last night I forgot to turn the alarm clock back on for the working week – oops! That left us in a bit of a rush to get out the door and I ended up being 10 minutes late arriving at work. It would have been a lot worse if we hadn’t started to prepare our lunches the night before!

My food bag contained Special K for breakfast, pretzels as a snack and a tuna sandwich and apple for lunch.

We had a really busy and productive weekend of sorting wedding presents and boxing up some items we no longer need (they’ll be off to the charity shop later this week). We also managed to complete a job we have been putting off for many months… we put up some shelves in the kitchen!!

DSC02178

It didn’t go without a hitch – I’m not sure DIY is our strong point – but at least we managed to get them up. What do you think?

I’ve been trying to organise the kitchen lately and keep the surfaces as clear as possible (clutter breeds clutter in our house!). Tonight I managed to sort out a cupboard and clear a space to keep the new toaster (another wedding gift!)

Much better!

Having finally completed the last of our thank you cards I decided to get the kitchen table back to its natural state rather than the workstation it has been for the last few weeks!

After:

DSC02184

(Loving the before and after shots!) I love how this looks now! The table runner and vase were both wedding gifts – aren’t they beautiful?

For the first time in ages I made one of our favourites for dinner – a chilli con cane. In fact I can’t believe I haven’t posted the recipe before. Look out for a step by step recipe post soon but in the meantime here is a sneak peak! I served the chilli with rice and sour cream.

DSC02190

Off to do some ironing and make sure my alarm is set for the morning :) See you later!

Wedding Presents!!

Guess what!! Our wedding presents have been delivered!

DSC02171As you can see my lounge has turned into a parcel storage warehouse! Hubby stayed home Friday morning to wait for the courier who finally arrived around 12.30pm! I was so impatient to get home from work on Friday so that I could start to unpack the presents – it’s just like Christmas!

Our original plan of slowly unpacking over a number of days went out the window and we went crazy with unpacking the gifts!

Our new dinner service:

DSC02174

I used one of my new bowls for breakfast this morning.

DSC02172

Special K, banana and milk. Yummy and kept me full til a late lunch. We headed out to a local restaurant for Sunday lunch today – perfect! Its been a busy weekend with lots of DIY and re-organising to fit the new gifts in. We have 2 huge boxes of old stuff to send to the charity shop tomorrow.

Full Freezer

Last week (while I was MIA!) we had a freezer disaster! The door was left slightly open overnight which resulted in everything defrosting and water all over the floor! You can guess how happy I was that morning :(

So we ended up chucking a lot of food out that day and as I went through the drawers I was amazed by what I found! All sorts of odds and ends were lurking at the back and I had no idea they were there! On Saturday I spent the afternoon properly defrosting and cleaning the freezer so that I could shop again for freezer staples on Sunday morning.

I stocked up on frozen veggies, frozen fruits (great for smoothies or breakfasts!), bagels (easy to toast from the freezer), fish, chicken and ice cream! It cost a small fortune but at least my freezer is now full of nutritious and usable foods that I can use to create quick but yummy meals!

From next week I plan to do some batch cooking and freeze portions of some of our favourites like chilli and soups so we can have yummy home-made meals on days that I don’t have time to cook!

What staples do you always keep in your freezer?

Getting Back On Track

Sorry for yet another unplanned absence from the blogosphere! A family member has been in hospital for a few days and that has meant that normal life (and blogging!) needed to go on the back burner.

But everything is looking up now and we are back to normal (or as normal as things ever get in my world!).

We have a few things to look forward to this week including delivery of our wedding gifts on Thursday! We need to get busy this week and make some space for them.

Back On Track Month

I’ve been inspired by Caitlin’s Back On Track Month challenge and have decided to jump on the wagon and run my own version. Thanks for the great idea Caitlin!

Current situation:

  • My house is messy
  • I’m not cooking enough
  • Too many treats in my diet
  • Exercise is almost non existent

Goals for November:

  • Exercise 3x per week
  • Eat out a maximum of once per week
  • Focus on ‘clean’ foods in my diet
  • De-clutter and sort the house

Stay tuned for updates but I am confident that with the blog to keep me accountable I will be able to turn things around during November!

As I have mentioned before, I am a list maker and am motivated by crossing things off lists! So to kick off Back on Track Month (from now on BOTM!) I sat down this evening to create a to-do list.

Now comes the hard work… :)

Working Wednesday

Sorry for the unplanned absence this week. I’ve been really busy since Sunday never quite found the time or energy to get online. Consequently my Google Reader has shot back up over 100 and I need to crack on and make a dent in that!

My week so far…Sunday was spent with family and we had a great day which included a brilliant roast dinner. I started the day with a light breakfast

DSC02162

Leftover smoothie from Saturday morning. I’ve never tried keeping homemade smoothies in the fridge before (thanks to Angela for confirming on Twitter that it would keep ok!).

Monday was back to work and I was super organised with my food….

Breakfast:

DSC02166 Greek Yogurt, strawberries, raspberries, Special K and Cinnamon squares.

Lunch:

DSC02164 Leftover Tomato, Blue Cheese and Quorn Pasta from Friday

Snacks:

DSC02169Cucumber, cherry tomatoes, 2 small sausage rolls and a small slice of coffee cake (the last two were sent home with us from my in laws at the weekend & need eating up!)

I took pretty much the same on Tuesday and today too (with a tuna sandwich instead of the leftover pasta for lunch).

Straight from work I headed out into town where we met with some friends for the cinema. We went to see the new Pixar film – Up – in 3D. I loved the film (as with all the Pixar movies) but be warned it’s a really emotional film. I was in tears in a few places! But it also has some big laughs too and some really funny characters. This was the first time I had seen a film in 3D (except for some shorts at theme parks) and I was quite surprised at how good it was!

This weekend we are staying with my parents for the weekend in Kent which I am really excited about!
