Introducing Lily…

IMG_5114

I can’t believe its taken me so long to get this post written! On Monday 1st November I gave birth to my beautiful baby daughter Lily. She was born at 11.50am and weighed 6lb 10oz. We feel truly blessed to have her in our lives and its hard to imagine life without her!

On the Saturday I started having what I felt were contractions which were building in intensity and frequency. I had almost no sleep on Saturday night due to this pain but on Sunday morning they died down and I realised that this was not labour, just practice labour! Damn!!

So I convinced myself that I had days left to go and headed to bed early on Sunday night feeling fine.

At 12.30am I was woken by some really painful contractions and knew immediately that this was it. I decided to let the hubby sleep for a while and headed downstairs on my own. I used the TENS machine for some pain relief for a few hours.

By 4.30 I was really struggling with the pain and knew that we would need to head to the hospital soon. I woke the husband and we grabbed our bags and headed to the car. The car journey was awful – each corner and bump in the road was excruciating! When we arrived at the hospital I was assessed and was already 5cm dilated.

Over the next few hours the labour progressed until I was fully dilated at about 10am. By then I had moved onto gas and air for the pain which I found really helped.

At about 10.30 I started to push. This was the hardest part of the labour by far. Although the pain wasn’t as intense as the contractions had been, the pushing phase was physically draining and I really struggled to keep my energy levels up. The midwives were amazing, as was hubby, and at 11.50 I gave birth to a baby girl.

We immediately had skin to skin contact and decided to call her Lily, a name we had been thinking about for a few weeks. We spent a couple of hours just holding and cuddling her before being moved to the ward where we had some visitors and later spent the night.

We were allowed home at 3pm the following day and since then we have been in a bit of a spin! We have had visits from Grandparents, Aunties and friends. We have taken Lily for her first pub lunch (she slept through the whole event) and to the supermarket.

I have been breastfeeding Lily since she was born and am really enjoying it. I will write a separate post on this as I have a lot to say on the subject!

The hubby is back to work tomorrow so I will be caring for Lily on my own during the day. Wish me luck!

Goodies Galore – Emma’s Diary

I recently found out about another pregnancy freebie kit and thought I’d share it with you in case any mums to be in the UK don’t know about it. This one is the Emma’s Diary Bump to Baby pack and I collected mine today while I was out shopping in town.

DSC03679

Emma’s Diary give you vouchers for a couple of these packs through your pregnancy and this one is the preparing for baby pack which can be collected after you are 27 weeks pregnant.

All you need is a voucher which you then take along to Argos or Lloyds Pharmacy to exchange for your pack.

I called in at Argos today and collected mine. All I had to do was hand the voucher over at the till and I was given a collection number to wait for my pack as usual in Argos.

I managed to wait until I got home to break into the pack.

And I could immediately see some goodies!

The content of these packs will always vary so don’t expect your pack to match this completely, but hopefully it gives you an idea of what you might expect.

I got the following samples…

DSC03682

  • Blackcurrant Fruit Flakes
  • 2 Lansinoh Breast Pads
  • 12 Bepanthen wipes
  • Pak of Kleenex tissues
  • Samples of Palmers Cocoa Butter products
  • 16 Huggies Pure wet wipes

Definitely some useful bits in there!

Then there was the usual paperwork…

DSC03684Most of this was adverts and competitions. The highlights were the Baby’s First Year leaflet and a development chart for the first year of baby’s life.

As you may have guessed, most of this headed straight to the recycling box as I had either seen it already or wasn’t interested. Shame there is so much waste in these packs.

So that was my Emma’s Diary Bump to Baby pack. Hope it was useful to see what it contained.

22 week update

Firstly I want to say a huge congratulations to Leah and Steve on the arrival of baby Sophie Victoria. I’m so pleased that everything went well and the pictures of her are adorable!

Looking at pictures of babies makes me realise how quickly the rest of my pregnancy will go! I am 22 weeks pregnant today and Thursday marks the 5 months pregnant milestone. Baby has grown to about 28cm long and I have started to feel definite movements in my belly through the day (and night!).

I’m feeling well though, which I am thankful for. Only problem I am having is with the heat. We have had a bit of a heat wave in the UK over the last couple of weeks, and I’m finding it hard to stay cool. Plenty of water and a pocket fan seem to be the solution! I’ve also got a definite baby bump. I’ll try and get a picture up soon for you to see.

So our 20 week scan has been and gone. It was amazing to see baby again and the development since the 12 week scan is amazing. We chose not to find out whether the baby is a boy or a girl, so we have that surprise to come! The baby was moving around loads and it was really fun to watch. It kicked its legs and stretched its arms loads. Only 18 weeks now until I get to meet baby in real life!

I’ve been looking at my camera and have found loads of food pics from the last few weeks which I haven’t shared with you yet so I will work on those over the next few days. Tonight hubby is out having a BBQ with some friends (commiserating over England’s world cup defeat) so I am chilling out and catching up on blog reading!

Catching up

Wow the last few weeks have been crazy – time is flying by and its hard to believe I am 19 weeks pregnant already! Almost half way through my pregnancy 🙂

The bump is developing nicely!

The background in this photo is the caravan in Hastings where we spent last week with my parents, sister and niece. We got lots of Auntie and Uncle time which was great practice 🙂

I’ve not been too organised lately with food so now we are back we are trying to get back to basics.

Dinner last night, was a comforting favourite, quiche and Caesar salad.

DSC03208

I used a low fat Caesar salad kit from Tesco and heated up some leftover Quiche Lorraine. Yummy and comforting!

While we were away, I treated myself to a new lunch bag – isn’t it cool! Today I loaded it up with a yummy packed breakfast and lunch.

DSC03213

For breakfast, I had a Total 0% Greek Yogurt, Special K and sliced strawberries. I also packed 2 Babybel Lights, apple, dried apricots and a cinnamon raisin cookie. Missing from the picture is a turkey salad and mayo sandwich which I ate for lunch.

I seem to have a need to snack all day at the moment! I’m trusting my body and going with it, which seems to be working well.

Oh and look at these flowers that my mother in law bought me this weekend.

DSC03215

Aren’t they beautiful? They are really brightening up the kitchen at the moment, which is a blessing as the weather outside is really miserable at the moment.

Lets hope it brightens up soon 🙂

Simple Stir Fry

Thanks for the kind emails and comments after Mondays announcement post!!

So glad to be back to the blog! I find it so helpful for keeping my food intake on track and inspiring me to be creative in the kitchen.

I wanted to take a minute to explain what changes my pregnancy is making to my diet and how that might affect what you see on the blog.

The most important thing to say is that yes, all diet and weight talk is gone! I have been wanting to get away from any obsessions with weight loss, calorie counting etc for ages in favour of a healthier overall diet, and here is my perfect opportunity!

One of the main changes in my diet through the last couple of months has been that the volume of food has increased! I am sooooo hungry almost all the time at the moment. It was a bit scary at first but I decided to trust my body and see what happens… and it hasn’t let me down. My eating is heading closer to the idea of 4-6 small meals a day. Currently 3 meals with 2-3 substantial snacks. And the type of foods are changing. Dairy has become my friend! Cheese, yogurts and milk feature a lot in my eats at the moment as they keep my fuller for longer and sit well on my stomach. If anything has decreased, I would say it was protein –its just not something I fancy eating a lot of at the moment.

Dinner tonight was an old favourite – chicken noodle stir fry. Stir fries are great – fresh and tasty, and super fast for a work night.

This one has ginger marinated chicken, red & yellow peppers, green beans, baby corn and wholemeal noodles.

Doesn’t that look great? So colourful.

I’m back!!

Hello… is anybody still out there?? 🙂

What can I say, its been a really long time since I posted and I have missed my blog like mad. But I have been keeping a secret for a couple of months which I couldn’t share with you. And every time I sat down to write I realised that if I can’t be honest, I don’t want to write.

So I’m sorry for abandoning the blog and my loyal readers! I hope that you will forgive me when I reveal the secret!

And that secret is…..

… I’m 15 weeks pregnant!!

I had a scan last week and we were able to see our lively little baby for the first time!

After suffering a miscarriage in December 09 we are really thrilled with the news, and I hope you can understand why it has been impossible to write.

Hubby and I are really excited, and I am looking forward to documenting this new chapter of my life on the blog alongside the usual recipes, food ideas and general chatter!

Coming up…

Regular blogging services will be resumed!
